| US marine officer, born in Middleburg, Florida, USA. The restless son of a school superintendent, he abandoned the law to enlist (1907), and rose through the ranks and trained as an aviator. On Okinawa in 1945 he commanded the US 10th Army, composed of marine and army units, becoming the first marine to command such a large unit. |
