| Aeronautical engineer, born in Farnworth, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He studied at the Manchester College of Technology, and joined the AVRO company in 1911, designing and manufacturing aeroplanes. During World War 1 he designed many famous types, including the Avro 504 trainer, and in World War 2 produced the Manchester and Lancaster heavy bombers. Following the war he designed the jetpropelled Tudor and Ashton. He was killed in a test flight of the Tudor II prototype. |
