| biography:
| Poet and novelist, born in Oldham, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He trained as a solicitor, and served in the Royal Navy during World War 2. His first collection, Poems, appeared in 1939, and his war-time experiences prompted The Middle of a War (1942) and A Lost Season (1944). His later poetic works include Brutus's Orchard (1957) and Retreads (1979). His novels include Second Curtain (1953) and Image of a Society (1956). He was professor of poetry at Oxford (1968–73). New and Collected Poems, 1934–84 were published in 1985, and two volumes of memoirs in 1989 and 1991. |
