| biography:
| New Zealand statesman and prime minister (1974–5), born in Motueka, New Zealand. He studied at Canterbury University, joined the New Zealand army, and served in the education corps before becoming active in the Labour Party. He entered parliament in 1962, and was finance minister in the administration of Norman Kirk. When Kirk died in 1974, he succeeded him as prime minister until the National Party returned to power. He was then appointed ambassador to the USA. |
