| Surgeon, pathologist, and writer, born in Pomfret, Connecticut, USA. At the University of Buffalo School of Medicine (1883–1914), he became chief surgeon for Buffalo General Hospital. A great surgeon, he promulgated important advances in bacteriology and pathology such as Lister's antiseptic technique. He researched malignant tumours and wrote widely on both the practice and history of medicine, publishing The Principles and Practice of Modern Surgery (1907) and The Evil Eye, Thanatology and Other Essays (1912). |
