| biography:
| Dancer, choreographer, ballet director, and teacher, born in Astrakhan, SW Russia. He joined both the Kharkov and Kiev Ballets (1926–9) as soloist and choreographer, while continuing to study (until 1932) at the Leningrad Theatre Institute. He was accepted into the Kirov Theatre, where he choreographed The Fountain of Bakhchisaray (1934), a milestone in Soviet ballet because of the depth with which its characters were delineated. He was associated with the Bolshoi Ballet from 1936 until the mid-1950s, variously as artistic director, choreographer, and tutor. |
