| Alleged spies: Julius Rosenberg (1918–53) and Ethel Rosenberg (1915–53), husband and wife, both born in New York City, USA. They were part of a transatlantic spy ring uncovered after the trial of Klaus Fuchs in Britain. Julius was an engineer with the US Army Signal Corps, and Ethel's brother, David Greenglass, worked at the nuclear research station at Los Alamos. They were convicted of passing on atomic secrets through an intermediary to the Soviet vice-consul. Greenglass turned witness for the prosecution and saved his life. The Rosenbergs were sentenced to death in 1951 and, despite numerous appeals from many West European countries and three stays of execution, were executed at Sing Sing prison, NY. There was great controversy over the case, as many people felt that they were the victims of the witch-hunt atmosphere in the USA in the early 1950s. |
