| German barrister and politician. A member of the Reichstag (1912–1916), he was imprisoned during World War 1 as an independent, anti-militarist Social Democrat. He was a founder member with Rosa Luxemburg of the German Communist Party (KPD) in 1918, and led an unsuccessful revolt in Berlin, the ‘Spartacus League Revolution’, in January 1919, during which he was killed by army officers. |
