| biography:
| Animal painter and sculptor, born in Bordeaux, SW France. She studied under her father, an art teacher, and became a highly renowned animal painter, exhibiting at the Salon in 1841–53. She was awarded a gold medal in 1848, and in 1865 became the first woman to receive the Grand Cross of the Légion d'honneur. She led a very unconventional and eccentric lifestyle, but painted in a conservative style. Very popular in England, her works include Ploughing in Nivernais (1849) and The Horse Fair (1853). |
