| Footballer, born in Bento Ribero, SE Brazil. A forward, he played for Cruzeiro, Brazil, then PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona, moving to Inter Milan in 1997 and Real Madrid in 2002. While at Barcelona he scored a Spanish league record of 34 goals in a season, his team also winning the European Cup Winners' Cup and the Spanish cup final. He has been FIFA International Footballer of the Year three times (1996, 1997, 2002) and European Player of the Year twice (1997, 2002). By the beginning of the 2002 World Cup he had won 57 caps playing for Brazil, scoring both goals in Brazil's cup-final winning game against Germany. He was named in the All-Star Team of the 2002 tournament, and won the Golden Boot Award for the tournament's leading scorer with eight goals. |
