| biography:
| Athlete, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. As a youth he was selected to carry the Olympic torch at the Melbourne Games of 1956, but he first concentrated on his career as an accountant. At one time he held the world records at such varied distances as 3 mi, 5 mi, 10 mi, 3000 m, 5000 m, and 10 000 m, and won a Bronze medal in the 10 000m in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Despite holding six world records simultaneously, he only came sixth in the 10 000 m in the Mexico City Olympics in 1968, being badly affected by the altitude. He retired after the 1970 Commonwealth Games. |
