| Trade union leader, born in London, UK. He joined the Ford Motor Co in 1954, and became a member of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU). He rose steadily from shop steward to be general secretary (1985–92). A skilled negotiator with a direct oratorical style, he won the union's leadership with strong left-wing support. Although viewed as a staunch supporter of Neil Kinnock, Labour Party leader at that time, his commitment to unilateral nuclear disarmament led to strains in the TGWU–Labour relationship. |
