| Legal scholar, born in Wooster, Massachusetts, USA. A leading theorist of jurisprudence, his work challenges strict adherence to the letter of the law in favour of individual liberties and moral principles, in books such as Taking Rights Seriously (1977), A Matter of Principle (1985), A Bill of Rights for Britain (1990), and Freedom's Law (1996). He taught at Yale (1962–9), then at Oxford, concurrently at New York University from 1975. |
