| biography:
| Physical chemist, born in Stainforth, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Leeds, and worked with radar as a naval officer in World War 2. In 1945 he moved to Cambridge, where he studied very fast reactions in gases, using a combination of electronic and spectroscopic techniques. He shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1967. He became director of the Royal Institution (1966–85), and president of the Royal Society (1985–90), continuing his work on ultra-rapid chemical reactions. He was knighted in 1972 and created a life peer in 1990. |
