| biography:
| Convicted thief and member of the gang who perpetrated the Great Train Robbery (England, UK, 1963). He was among the first five to be arrested for the theft, having been traced by fingerprints left at the gang's farm hideout. Convicted and sentenced to 25 years for conspiracy and 30 years (to run concurrently) for armed robbery, he escaped from Wandsworth Prison in 1965 and fled to Australia. Pursued by the police, he eventually settled in Brazil. There, he was saved from extradition because his girlfriend was pregnant (under Brazilian law, fathers of Brazilian children cannot be extradited). He lived in Brazil, with an income generated largely by press interviews. The question of his extradition arose again in 1997, after his son came of age, but he was allowed to stay. Suffering from bad health he finally returned to Britain voluntarily in 2001and was imprisoned. |
