| biography:
| Theologian and essayist, born in Birmingham, West Midlands, C England, UK. He studied at Oxford, where he became a lecturer (1910), but resigned in 1917 on being converted to Catholicism. He was then ordained, and appointed Catholic chaplain to the university (1926–39). He wrote an influential translation of the Bible, and several works of apologetics, as well as detective novels. His autobiography, A Spiritual Aeneid, appeared in 1918. |
