| biography:
| Priest and politician, born in Monte San Pietrangeli, E Italy. Committed to social justice, he founded the review Cultura sociale (Social Culture) (1898–1906) and the Lega Democratica Nazionale (National Democratic League) in 1905. He believed Catholics should be more active in political life, and was suspended from the exercise of sacred functions in 1907 because of his support for modernism and the class struggle. In 1909 he became a deputy of the left and was excommunicated. He was in favour of Italian intervention in World War 1. He fell into line with the Church before he died. |
