| biography:
| Polish film-maker, born in Paris, France. An actor on radio and in the theatre, he attended the State Film School in Łódź (1954–9), making a number of short films. His feature-length debut, Nóz w Wodzie (1962, Knife in the Water), brought him international recognition, and he later worked in London, Paris and Los Angeles on such films as Repulsion (1965), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Tess (1979), Frantic (1988), Bitter Moon (1992), Death and the Maiden (1995), The Ninth Gate (1999), and The Pianist (2002, Cannes Palme d'Or; BAFTA; Oscar). A traumatic life that includes his internment in a German concentration camp, where his mother died, and the horrifying murder of his second wife, actress Sharon Tate (1943–69), has been reflected in his artistic concern with alienation, and the understanding of evil. On stage, he has directed Lulu (1974) and Rigoletto (1976) and acted in Amadeus (1981) and Metamorphosis (1988). |
