| Linguist, born in Moscow, Russia. The founder of the Moscow Linguistic Circle (which generated Russian formalism), he moved in 1920 to Czechoslovakia (starting the Prague Linguistic Circle), and finally in 1941 to the USA, where he taught at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology until his death. His many books and papers on language have had a great influence on linguistic and literary thought. |
