| biography:
| Immunologist, born in Basel, N Switzerland. He studied at the University of Basel and at the Australian National University, Canberra, where he worked with Peter Doherty, then became a researcher at the Institute of Experimental Immunology in Zurich. He shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1996 for his contribution to the discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells - research which was first reported in 1974. He also shared the Paul Erlich Prize (1983) and the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award (1995) for this research. |
