| Choreographer and dancer, born in Paris, France. He trained at the Paris Opéra Ballet, and became its leading dancer (1943). In 1948 he founded Les Ballets de Paris de Roland Petit, which toured widely in Europe and the USA. He created a repertory of new ballet, and was also responsible for the ballet sequences in the film Hans Christian Andersen (1952), danced by his wife, Zizi (Renée) Jeanmaire (1924– ). In 1972 he founded the Ballet de Marseille, and became its director. |
