| Religious painter, born in Tournai, W Belgium. He studied in Tournai, and by 1436 was official painter to the city of Brussels. Little is known of his life, and even his identity has been disputed. He executed many portraits and altarpieces, and among his best-known works are ‘The Descent from the Cross’ (c.1435–40, Madrid) and the ‘Last Judgment’ altarpiece (c.1450, Beaune). |
