| biography:
| Founder of the Taizé Community, born in Provence, SE France. In 1940 he went to Taizé, between Cluny and Citeaux, to establish a community devoted to reconciliation and peace in Church and society. Since 1949, when the first seven brothers took their vows, thousands of pilgrims have been attracted, especially young people drawn there by the distinctive worship in the Church of Reconciliation, built in 1962. His publications include The Dynamic of the Provisional (1965), Violent for Peace (1968), and several volumes of extracts from his journal. In 1974 he received the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. |
