| biography:
| Writer, born in Epiry, C France. A pupil of the Jesuits, he was a brilliant soldier by the age of 16. He served during the civil wars of the Fronde, becoming lieutenant colonel general of the light cavalry in 1653. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1665, and later that year composed L'Histoire amoureuse des Gaules, four scandalous and amusing tales about court ladies. The unauthorized printing of this work brought him disgrace, and he was imprisoned for 13 months, then sent into exile to his native Burgundy. He conducted a prolific correspondence with his cousin, the celebrated letter writer the Marquise de Sévigné. |
