| US naval officer and explorer, born in Newington, Connecticut, USA. He trained at the US Naval Academy (1884), served in three Arctic explorations, and wrote English-Eskimo and Eskimo-English Vocabularies (1890). He explored the Orinoco R (South America) (1891), served with distinction in the Spanish-American War, and was the director of naval intelligence during World War 1. |
