| French novelist. He won the competition for the Quai d'Orsay, became the ambassador's secretary in Athens, then was recalled to Paris (1938–40). He was dismissed in 1945 amid the scandal of his novel Les Amitiés particulières (Prix Renaudot, 1944). There followed La Mort d'une mère (1950), Les Ambassades (1951), Les Clès de Saint-Pierre (1955), and Propos secrets (2 vols, 1976). He also wrote biographies, including Nanouche (1972), Alexandre (3 vols), and Voltaire (2 vols). He was restored to his former position at the foreign office and retired in 1978. His cousin Alain Peyrefitte (1925– ) a diplomat and writer, published Quand la Chine s'éveillera (1973), Le Mal Français (1977), La France en desarroi (1992), and Le Regard des Anglais (1998). |
