| Lawyer and corporate executive, born in Riverside, Pennsylvania, USA. He left a Wall Street law firm to join US Steel (1942–69). As chairman and chief executive officer (1955–69) he directed the world's largest steel manufacturer and the USA's third-largest corporation. In 1962 his proposal to increase steel prices after a wage-increase settlement led to a famous confrontation with President John F Kennedy. He returned to law practice in later years. |
