| Essayist, born in Reims, NE France. In 1938 he established the ‘collège de sociologie’ with Michel Leiris and Georges Bataille. A ‘normalien’, tempted by Surrealism, he moved between rationalism and fantasy in works such as Le Mythe et l'homme (1938), L'Homme et le sacré (1939), and Au Coeur du fantastique (1965). He edited the collection La Croix du sud for Gallimard, in which he introduced the culture of South America, where he lived in 1940–5. Critical works include Approches de la poésie (1978), and he wrote about politics in Description du Marxisme (1950). In 1978 appeared an autobiography, Le Fleuve alphée. |
