| biography:
| Playwright, born in Madrid, Spain, who studied with the Jesuits at their Colegio Imperial in Madrid and then lived at court. He was praised by Lope de Vega in the Laurel de Apolo, while Cervantes described him (in the Viaje del Parnaso) as ‘insigne en letra y en virtudes raro’. His finest play, Del cielo viene el buen rey combines courtly, religious, and symbolic threads in a manner anticipating that of Calderón, though he is more frequently associated with the school of Lope. Herrera also wrote El primer templo de España; La fe no ha menester armas, y venida del inglés a Cádiz; Lo cauteloso de un guante, y confusión de un papel; and the satirical Castigar por defender. He used the Crónica de España (Part 3, chapters 11 and 19) as a source for a rather laboured historical play El voto de Santiago, y batalla de Clavijo. |
