| biography:
| British painter. He studied at the Slade School of Art, London, and joined the London Group in 1933. He was an official war artist (1943–4), and professor of painting at the Royal College of Art (1948–57). Most of his works are of an Impressionist nature, with soft tones, such as his portrait of Elizabeth II, ‘Princess Elizabeth’, but he later changed to non-figurative painting of equal sensitivity. |
