| Film actor, born in Westhampton, New York, USA. He trained at the Actors' Studio in New York City, emerging as an exponent of the Method, and and made his Broadway debut in 1951 in Night Music. He became known following his first major role, in On the Waterfront (1954), and went on to star in a variety of demanding roles. His many other films include Al Capone (1958), Dr Zhivago (1965), The Pawnbroker (1965), In the Heat of the Night (1967, Oscar, Golden Globe), American Gothic (1988), The Specialist (1994), Mars Attacks! (1995), and End of Days (1999). |
