| Evangelist, born of nomadic Gypsy parents near Epping Forest, Essex, SE England, UK. He was converted at a Primitive Methodist meeting in 1876. Soon afterwards he joined William Booth, and became one of the first officers in the newly formed Salvation Army. He left the Army in 1882 to carry on his evangelism under the auspices of the Free Church, preaching forcefully in America, Australia, and elsewhere, as well as in Britain. |
