| Writer, arts administrator, and musician, born in Solihull, West Midlands, C England, UK. He was educated in England, then at the University of Queensland. He has published widely as a poet, with works such as Penniless Till Doomsday (1962) and Romulus and Remus (1971), and was influential as The Australian newspaper's poetry editor (1967–78). He has also edited some significant collections of Australian poetry. His novels include The Ship on the Coin (1972), Just Relations (1982, Miles Franklin Award), Captivity Captive (1988), The Second Bridegroom (1991), and Island in the Mind (1997). His narratives are often poetic and epic, and his work reveals a familiarity with a range of myths and legends. He was also chair of the Australia Council (1991–4). His Return to the Brink appeared in 1999. |
