| Tennis player, born in Rockhampton, Queensland, NE Australia. An aggressive left-handed player, he first won the Wimbledon singles title in 1961, and again in 1962 in the course of a Grand Slam of all the major titles (British, US, French, and Australian). He turned professional in 1962 and won the world singles title five times between 1964 and 1970. In 1968, when Wimbledon went open, he took the title, and won again in the course of another Grand Slam the following year. The first professional to make more than $1 million, he won more money than anyone else until 1978. |
