| Film actor and entertainer, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He studied acting at the Juilliard School in New York City, then settled in San Francisco and developed a nightclub act. He starred in the television comedy series Mork and Mindy (1978–82), made his film debut in Popeye (1981), and became known for his versatile and energetic performances. He earned an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award for Good Morning Vietnam (1987), another Oscar nomination for Dead Poets Society (1989), and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Good Will Hunting (1997). Other films include Awakenings (1990), Hook (1991), Mrs Doubtfire (1993), The Birdcage (1996), and Get Bruce (1999), he provided the voice of the genie in Aladdin (1991), and the voice of Dr Know in Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001). He has also continued to perform as a stand-up comic entertainer. |
