| biography:
| Scholar and lexicographer, born in Wanganui, New Zealand. He studied at Victoria University College, Wellington, and at Oxford, where he became a lecturer in English language (1952–63), then a tutorial fellow (1963–79) and senior research fellow at St Peter's College (1979–90). In 1957 he was appointed editor of a new Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary which appeared in four volumes between 1972 and 1986. He also wrote several books on the English language, and was co-author of a report (1979) on the quality of spoken English on BBC radio. |
