| biography:
| Writer, born in Biel, NW Switzerland. His first poems were published in 1898 and were much admired by literary figures including Christian Morgenstern and Franz Kafka. He wrote melodious, sensitive impressionist poetry and prose which also permitted glimpses of another, darker view of existence and of the deep pessimism which pervaded his own life. His prose works, including his three major novels, Geschwister Tanner (1907), Der Gehülfe (1908), and Jakob von Gunten (1909), are characterized by an incisive style. He spent the last 23 years of his life in a mental institution. |
