| biography:
| Physicist, born in Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada. He went to the USA with his parents (1923), and became a researcher with the Submarine Signal Co (Massachusetts) (1941–2), and then performed radiation research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1942–6) before joining Harvard (1945–89). He made pioneering studies of nuclear magnetic resonance (1940s–1950s), and carried out extensive relativistic gravitational investigations using gamma rays (1950s–1960s). |
