| biography:
| US Democratic politician and businessman, born in San Francisco, California, USA. After service in the air force (1943–6), he worked his way up in the Ford Motor Co to president by 1960, and in 1961 joined the Kennedy administration as secretary of defense, being particularly involved in the Vietnam War. In 1968 he resigned to become president of the World Bank (a post he held until 1981). In the 1980s he emerged as a critic of the nuclear arms race, and among his publications are Blundering into Disaster (1987) and In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam (1995). |
