| Sociology author, born in New Albany, Indiana, USA. He worked at research institutions until 1931, then taught at Columbia University. In 1921 he married Helen Merrell (1894–1982), born in La Grange, Illinois, USA. She taught at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville (1929–64). Together they conducted a sociological study of Muncie, IN, on which they based two successful books: Middletown: a Study in Contemporary American Culture (1929) and Middletown in Transition: a Study in Cultural Conflicts (1937). |
