| Chemist and physicist, born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Chicago, then taught briefly at New York (1926–8), before settling as a professor at Chicago. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1966 for his work on chemical bonds and the electronic structure of molecules. |
