| biography:
| Naturalist and explorer, born in Trebatsch, E Germany. He studied at the universities of Berlin and Göttingen, arrived in Sydney in 1842, and mounted an important expedition from Brisbane heading NW in 1844. He had been presumed lost when his arrival back in Sydney in March 1846 caused great excitement. He was forced to turn back from his next expedition, and in 1848 set off on a third trans-continental journey, from which he and his party disappeared without trace. By this time he had become a national hero, and searches were mounted for nearly a century afterwards. |
