| French soldier, born in Tulle, SC France. He was an artillery colonel in 1914, and made his name when in command of the army of Verdun by recapturing Douaumont and other forts (1916). He was commander-in-chief for several months (1916–17), but his Aisne offensive failed, and he was superseded by Pétain. |
