| Clergyman and scholar, born in Winchester, Hampshire, S England, UK. In 1741 he became professor of poetry at Oxford, in 1766 Bishop of St David's and of Oxford, and in 1777 Bishop of London. His publications include a Life of William of Wykeham (1758) and a new translation of Isaiah (1778). He was one of the first to treat the Bible poetry as literature in its own right. His highly prescriptive English grammar was extremely influential on the subsequent course of English language teaching in British schools. |
