| US senator, born in Lynchburg, Virginia, USA. Part Cherokee (through his mother), he was active in tribal affairs in Indian Territory both before and after he became a lawyer (1880). He played a major role in the act of Congress that gave US citizenship to the Native Americans in Indian Territory. As soon as Oklahoma became a state, he was elected to the US Senate (Democrat, 1907–25) and became identified with liberal causes, particularly with progressive labour legislation. |
