| French Socialist statesman, born in Azerat, SW France. In World War 2 he began the first Trade Union Resistance Group, and thereafter held various ministerial posts including minister of industrial production (1944), and minister for industry and commerce (1946–7, and 1948). His period as resident minister in Algeria (1956–8) highlighted the ruthless aspect of French post-war politics. |
