| Physical educator, born in Tonawanda, New York, USA. A highly successful swimming coach, he retired after 41 years at Yale with a 528–12 dual meet record and 38 eastern intercollegiate and 14 national championships. He also coached (1928–48) US Olympic swimming teams. He was awarded the US Medal of Freedom in 1963. |
