| King of Scots (1329–71), the only surviving son of Robert Bruce, born in Dunfermline, Fife, E Scotland, UK. He became king at the age of five. In 1334, after the victory of Edward III of England at Halidon Hill (1333) he fled to France. He returned in 1341, and later invaded England, but was defeated and captured at Neville's Cross (1346), and was kept prisoner for 11 years. After his death he was succeeded by his sister's son, Robert II. |
