| Judge, born in Spring Creek, Pennsylvania, USA. He served as counsel to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (1934–6) and to the Department of Justice (1936–40). He was US attorney general (1940–1) when President Franklin D Roosevelt appointed him to the US Supreme Court (1941–54). After World War 2, he served as chief prosecutor at the Nuremberg war crimes trials (1945–6). |
