| biography:
| Ecologist, born in Toronto, Ontario, SE Canada. He studied mathematics at Yale, changed to zoology, and from 1965 was professor of biology at Princeton. His early work on birds led him to devise methods for quantifying ecological factors. He categorized animals as ‘R’ species (opportunistic, with rapid reproduction and development, short lives, and high mortality), and ‘K’ species (larger, slowly developing, more stable). In 1962 he showed that natural selection principles apply to both groups. |
